## Description

The Bourns SMCJ15A is a unidirectional transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode engineered to provide robust circuit protection against electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical fast transients (EFT), and high-energy surge events. Housed in a surface-mount DO-214AB (SMC) plastic package featuring two pins, this device delivers a peak pulse power dissipation rating of 1.5 kW using a standard 10/1000 µs waveform. It operates with a reverse standoff voltage ($V_{RWM}$) of 15 V and features a tight 5% tolerance breakdown voltage ranging from a minimum of 16.7 V to a maximum of 18.5 V. Under surge conditions, the component limits transient spikes to a maximum clamping voltage ($V_c$) of 31.7 V at its peak pulse current, ensuring sensitive downstream silicon remains within safe operational limits.

Designed for reliability in demanding operating environments, the SMCJ Series diode supports a wide operating and storage temperature range from -55°C up to +150°C. The molded plastic package meets UL 94V-0 flammability standards, and the flat configuration facilitates seamless automated assembly utilizing standard pick-and-place equipment while eliminating roll-away issues during manufacturing. Typical response times for this unidirectional architecture are exceptionally fast, operating in under 1.0 picosecond from 0 V to the minimum breakdown voltage. 

This TVS diode is well-suited for high-density printed circuit boards across telecommunications, computing, and industrial power distribution systems requiring reliable voltage clamping. Typical application circuits include power supply input protection, data and signal line transient suppression, and peripheral port interfaces where compliance with stringent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards such as IEC 61000-4-2 (ESD), IEC 61000-4-4 (EFT), and IEC 61000-4-5 (Surge) is mandatory.

The markets of portable communications, computing and video equipment are challenging the semiconductor industry to develop increasingly smaller electronic components. 

Bourns offers Transient Voltage Suppressor Diodes for surge and ESD protection applications, in compact chip package DO-214AB (SMC) size format. The Transient Voltage Suppressor series offers a choice of Working Peak Reverse Voltage from 5 V up to 495 V and Breakdown Voltage up to 550 V. Typical fast response times are less than 1.0 picosecond for unidirectional devices and less than 5.0 picoseconds for bidirectional devices from 0 V to Minimum Breakdown Voltage.
